3.117 Rotate Page Content

Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • which prerequisites are required for this Fixup, and
  • how to apply this Fixup.

1. Introduction

The Fixup Rotate Page Content is available in the Workflow. The purpose of this Fixup is to rotate the page content by a defined angle and, if necessary, to adjust the dimension accordingly.

2. General

The Fixup Rotate Page Content can be used if, for example, a Print Item should be rotated by 45° or by a small angle – to align the horizon in an image.

You can find this Fixup in the footer of the sections Document Information and User-defined fields in the Fixup group Rotate and Mirror of an Article, Job or Production Job or in the tab Data Preparation.

3. Description

The Fixup rotates the page content by the desired angle. Whether the size of the Print Item needs to be adjusted or not depends on whether there is enough white space around the Print Item.

Please note that rotating the page content neither changes the TrimBox nor adapts it to the new conditions. To adjust the TrimBox to a Dieline after rotating the page content, use the Fixup Set TrimBox to the Dieline.

3.1. Prerequisites and Functionality

For the Fixup to perform as intended, no requirements must be met.

The following options are available:

  • Templates [1] – settings selected in the dialog can be saved as a template and applied to other Articles/Print Items, as well as used within Fixup Chains and in the Operations Apply Fixups and Check Print Item and Apply Fixups.
  • Rotation [2] – specify the angle by which the page content should be rotated. For Variable Content [8], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the rotation should be retrieved.
  • Direction [3] – select the direction in which content should be rotated. You can select the following options:
    • Clockwise – rotates the content to the right using the entered angle.
    • Counterclockwise – rotates the content to the left using the entered angle.
    • Variable Content [9] – for Variable Content [9], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the rotation should be retrieved.
      • Clock
      • CClock

  • Relative to the [4] – select the point from which the rotation should be performed. The following options are available:
    • Bottom Center – the Print Item is rotated starting from the center of the lower edge.
    • Center – the Print Item is rotated starting from the horizontal as well as vertical center.
    • Left Center – the Print Item is rotated starting from the center of the left edge.
    • Lower Left Corner – the Print Item is rotated starting from the lower left corner.
    • Lower Right Corner – the Print Item is rotated starting from the lower right corner.
    • Right Center – the Print Item is rotated from the center of the right edge.
    • Top Center – the Print Item is rotated from the center of the top edge.
    • Upper Left Corner – the Print Item is rotated from the upper left corner.
    • Upper Right Corner – the Print Item is rotated from the upper right corner.
    • Variable Content [11] – for Variable Content [11], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the rotation should be retrieved.

  • CropBox
  • BleedBox
  • TrimBox
  • MediaBox
  • ArtBox
  • Variable Content [12] – for Variable Content [12], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the rotation should be retrieved.

rotated test file result
  • Enlarge PageBox [6] – by enabling this option, the PageBoxes are adjusted accordingly. Activate this option if the Print Items no longer fit completely on the Artboard after rotation due to a shifted rotation point.
  • X Offset [7] – the Print Item is shifted along the X axis by the entered value for rotation ("+" values to the right, "-" values to the left). For Variable Content [13], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the X offset of the rotation point should be retrieved.
  • Y Offset [8] – the Print Item is moved along the Y axis by the entered value for rotation ("+" values upwards, "-" values downwards). For Variable Content [14], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the Y offset of the rotation point should be retrieved.

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this function, refer to the sample file "Rotate_Page_Content_Start". In this source file, the Print Item is not optimally arranged, but the TrimBox and BleedBox have been correctly created for the print file.

The Print Item should be rotated clockwise by 45° to reduce the height of the Print Item, allowing multiple Print Items to be imposed on a single Impose Sheet.

After applying the Fixup, the corrected file "Rotate_Page_Content_End" is created. Note that by using the option Enlarge PageBox, the TrimBox and BleedBox have been adjusted accordingly and no longer match the Print Item content exactly.

before/after image

Apply the Fixup Set TrimBox to Dieline to the new Print Item to readjust the TrimBox and BleedBox. The resulting file should match the layout shown in the image below.

Automating the Process

If you need to process a large series of Print Items using this Fixup sequence, we recommend to create a Fixup Chain under Administration > Fixup Chains.
