3.11 Add Caption

Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • which prerequisites must be met for this Fixup, and
  • how to apply the Fixup.

1. Introduction

The $PRODUCT_NAME_WORKFLOW application provides the Add Caption Fixup. The purpose of this Fixup is to add a caption to the selected side of the Print Item using the specified font, size, position and color.

2. General

The Add Caption Fixup can be used to add additional information outside the ImageBox or outside the ImageBox + Bleed. It can also be used to create a separate or enclosing Dieline for the caption.

You can find the Fixup in the Data Preparation tab of an Article, Order or Production Job by:

  • entering the name of the Fixup in the Filter area,
  • enabling the Object option in the Category area,
  • enabling the Add option in the Action area,
  • enabling the Caption option in the Property area.

3. Description

This Fixup can be used to add a caption to the selected sides of the Print Item. The caption can consist of user-defined text, dynamically generated text based on placeholders, or text from a User-defined Field. The position, font, font size, and font color can be specified. In addition, a Dieline can be created for the caption, either as a separate Dieline or as a tab.

3.1. Prerequisites and Functionality

For the Fixup to perform as intended, no special conditions are required.

Figure 1: Left: The Basic Settings tab of the Add Caption dialog; Right: Values required in the selected field for the Alignment option

You can select from the following options on the Basic Settings tab:

  • Templates [1] – settings selected in the dialog can be saved as a template and therefore applied to other Articles/Print Items, used within Fixup Chains, and used in the Apply Fixups and Check Print Item and Apply Fixups operations.
  • Text [2] – enter the text to be added as the caption. For the Variable Content [12], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the text should be retrieved.
  • Truncate Replaced Text [3] – the following options are available to truncate the text of the caption:
    • Do not truncate – the caption text is not truncated and is inserted at its full length.
    • Truncate text – only a selected number of characters from the beginning, middle, or end of the caption text is used. Enter the desired number of characters in Options [13]. The values required to achieve the desired result can be viewed in the Info Box [14].
    • Substring of Text – only a selected substring of the caption text is used. Enter the desired number of characters in Options [13]. The values required to achieve the desired result can be viewed in the Info Box [14].
  • Origin [4] – select the respective side of the Print Item on which the caption should be created.
  • Position [5] – select where the caption should be positioned on the respective side of the Print Item. The following options are available:
    • ImageBox – the caption is placed outside the ImageBox. However, if the ImageBox is positioned on the CropBox or MediaBox, the caption is positioned inside the respective box. For more information, see Caption Outside the CropBox and MediaBox Not Possible at the end of this section.
    • ImageBox + Bleed – the caption is placed outside the Bleed. However, if the ImageBox is positioned on the CropBox or MediaBox, the caption is positioned inside the respective box. Also note the information at the end of this description. For more information, see Caption Outside the CropBox and MediaBox Not Possible at the end of this section.
  • Alignment [15] – select the alignment of the text on the selected sides. The following options are available:
  • Left – the caption is placed on the left of the selected side.
  • Center – the caption is placed in the center of the selected side.
  • Right – the caption is placed on the right of the selected side.
    • Variable Content [16] – select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the alignment should be retrieved. The selected field must contain one of the following values for the caption to be generated:
      • Left
      • Mid
      • Right
  • Indent [6] – enter the value for the indent of the caption on the selected page. "+" values indent the text, while "-" values outdent the text. For the Variable Content [7], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the indent should be retrieved.
  • Offset [17] – enter the offset value – the distance from the selected position. "+" values move the text outward, while "-" values move the text inward. For the Variable Content [18], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the offset should be retrieved.
  • Rotate 180° [8] – select the checkbox to rotate the caption text by 180°.
  • Font [9] – select the font of the caption. The following options are available:
    • Arial
    • Calibri
    • Candara
    • Tahoma
    • Verdana
  • Font Size [19] – select the text size for the caption. For the Variable Content [20], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the font size should be retrieved.
  • Font Color [10] – enter the CMYK color values for the caption. The selected color is displayed in the preview image.
  • Add White Background [11] – select the checkbox to add a white background bar behind the text.

Expected Bleed is Applied

If ImageBox + Bleed is selected as the position, the position entered for the expected Bleed is used as the starting point. Note that this position does not refer to the actual Bleed.

Figure 2: The Advanced tab of the Add Caption dialog

You can select from the following options on the Advanced tab:

  • Create separate Dieline for Caption [21] – select the checkbox to create a separate Dieline for the caption using the selected Spot Color, Stroke Width, and defined Offset.
  • Create as Tab [26] – select this option if the caption should be integrated as a tab into the existing Dieline instead of creating a separate Dieline.
  • Spot Color Name [22] – select a Technical Color from the drop-down menu to be used for the additional Dieline.
  • Stroke Width [23] – enter the stroke width for the Dieline. For the Variable Content [24], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the stroke width should be retrieved.
  • Offset [27] – enter the offset of the Dieline from the caption. For the Variable Content [28], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the offset should be retrieved.
  • Layer Name [25] – enter the name of the layer on which the caption should be created. If no separate layer should be created, remove the name from the input field. For the Variable Content [29], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the layer name should be retrieved.

Caption Cannot Be Placed Outside the CropBoc and MediaBox

It is not possible to set a caption outside the CropBox and MediaBox. Objects located outside the CropBox are not rendered and are therefore not visible after printing. If the ImageBox is positioned on the CropBox or MediaBox, the caption is placed inside the CropBox.

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this Fixup, you can use the sample file "Sample_Add Caption.pdf". The file has a Bleed of 10 mm.

After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_Add Caption_End.pdf" is created. In this file, the caption was added using the values shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.
