3.114 Resize TrimBox

Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • which prerequisites are required for this Fixup, and
  • how to apply the Fixup.

1. Introduction

The Fixup Resize TrimBox is available in the Workflow. The purpose of this Fixup is merely to adjust the size of the TrimBox, thus to work with exact sizes in production.

2. General

Use this Fixup after checking-in the print data if the TrimBox does not have the required size and needs to be adjusted slightly.

You can find this Fixup in the footer of the sections Document Information and User-defined Fields under the tab Print Data of an Article, Production Job or Order or under the tab Data Preparation.

3. Fixup Description

This Fixup modifies the size of the TrimBox by adjusting its frame, that is, the Box size for the specified page. However, it does not allow entering an absolute size for the TrimBox. The user can only expand or reduce the selected page(s) by applying positive "+" or negative "-" values. All other existing page geometry boxes are not affected by this Fixup, unless the adjusted TrimBox extends beyond the MediaBox or BleedBox. In this case, the MediaBox and BleedBox are automatically adjusted accordingly.

3.1. Prerequisites and Functionality

For the Fixup to perform as intended, the following requirement must be met:

  • The Print Item must have a defined TrimBox.

The easiest way to create a PageBox is by using the Fixups Set TrimBox to the Dieline, Derive Page Geometry Boxes from Crop Marks, Derive a PageBox from Colored Objects or Set PageBoxes.

You can choose from the following options (after unlocking the lock icon):

  • Templates [1] – settings selected in the dialog can be saved as a template and applied to otherArticles/Print Items, as well as used within Fixup Chains and in the OperationsApply FixupsandCheck Print Item and Apply Fixups.
  • Top – Moves the top edge of the TrimBox ("+" moves up or "-" moves down)
  • Bottom – Moves the bottom edge of the TrimBox ("+" moves up or "-" moves down)
  • Left – Moves the left edge of the TrimBox ("+" moves up or "-" moves down)
  • Right – Moves the right edge of the TrimBox ("+" moves up or "-" moves down)
  • Variable Content [2] – for Variable Content [2], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for Top, Bottom, Left and Right should be retrieved.

4. Before/After

To experiment with this function, you can refer to the sample file "Inaccurate_TrimBox_Start.pdf". In this source file the TrimBox has an effective width of 94.87 mm and an effective height of 142.98 mm. Since the Print Item will be cut with using a laser cutter, the effective size of the TrimBox needs to be adjusted to 95.00 x 143.00 mm, starting from the top-left edge. By moving the bottom and right edges using the appropriate difference values, the TrimBox can be resized to the exact required dimensions.

After applying the Fixup, the resulting file "Inaccurate_TrimBox_End.pdf" is created, reflecting the corrected TrimBox size.
