Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • which prerequisites are required for this Fixup, and
  • how to apply this Fixup.

1. Introduction

The Fixup Embed missing Fonts is available in the Workflow. The purpose of this Fixup is to embed missing fonts in order to display glyphs correctly in the output.

2. General

The Fixup Embed missing Fonts can be used to embed missing fonts in the PDF. The system searches for the missing font in the local font directory and embeds it fully or as a font subset, provided that the font is stored in the font directory.

You can find this Fixup on the tab Data Preparation of an Article, Order or Production Job by:

  • entering the name of the Fixup in the area Filter,
  • activating the option Font in the area Category,
  • activating the option Add in the area Action,
  • activating the option Embed in the area Property.

3. Description

Use this Fixup to search for the font directories on the server's local system and fully embed any found fonts. Even if at first glance it does not seem to make any difference whether the font is embedded or not, you will see the difference when directly comparing and will therefore surely prefere the embedded font.

Missing fonts are highlighted in red in the tab Print Data of the Print Item view in the settings area Fonts.

Missing Fonts are Replaced

A missing font is replaced by a substitute font in the Workflow during rendering. The appearance may differ significantly from the original.

3.1. Prerequisites and Functionality

For the Fixup to perform as intended, the following requirements must be met:

  • The file contains fonts that are not embedded.
  • The fonts to be embedded are located in the system-wide font directory of the Workflow server.

No further options are available.

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this Fixup, refer to the sample file "Sample_no_embed fonts.pdf". The font Helvetica Neue with the font style Condensed Black was used for the headline. For the body text, the font Arial was used with the font styles Regular and Bold. The font Sigurd Light with the font style Light was used for the footer.

After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_no_embed fonts_End.pdf" is created. The font Arial has been fully embedded. The font Helvetica Neue is in the font directory, but not the correct font style. The font Sigurn Light is not in the font directory and therefore could not be embedded.

The file "Sample_embed fonts.pdf" is also available for comparison. All fonts are fully embedded in this file.
