Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • which prerequisites are required for this Fixup, and
  • how to apply this Fixup.

1. Introduction

The Fixup Scale Page Content - Width and Height is available in the Workflow. The purpose of this Fixup is to scale the page content within the TrimBox to a specific size by entering the desired width and height.

2. General

The Fixup Scale Page Content - Width and Height can be used to scale the page content to a specific size by entering the width and height, either in absolute terms or as a percentage, based on the selected Scale Method.

You can find this Fixup in the Fixup group Edit PageBox in the Print Items detail view, as well as in the tab Data Preparation of an Article, Job or Production Job by:

  • entering the name of the Fixup in the area Filter,
  • activating the option Page Content in the area Category,
  • activating the option Scale in the area Action,
  • activating the option BleedBox or TrimBox in the area Property.

3. Description

Use this Fixup to scale the page content within the TrimBox to a specified size, either in absolute terms or as a percentage. Several Scale Methods are available for this purpose. The Bleed is adjusted proportionally based on the scaling.

After the execution, the Fixup displays the current width and height of the ImageBox. In addition, the CropBox is automatically set to match the size of the MediaBox.

3.1. Prerequisites and Functionality

For the Fixup to perform as intended, the following requirements must be met:

  • A TrimBox must be present in the Print Item. The MediaBox exists by default in every PDF file.
  • The BleedBox may also be present.

The following options can be selected to scale the page content:

  • Templates [1] – settings selected in the dialog can be saved as a template and applied to other Articles/Print Items, as well as used within Fixup Chains and in the Operations Apply Fixups and Check Print Item and Apply Fixups.
  • Scale Method [2] – select the Scale Method to be used. The following options are available in the selection menu:
  • Fit from inside (Scale page edges proportionally) – scales the image area of the TrimBox to the specified size while maintaining its original proportions.  Only the resolution of the images is adjusted according to the applied enlargement or reduction. The Short Edge of the target size is used for the calculation. Please note that only the value entered for the short edge is retained. The long edge is adjusted proportionally.
  • Variable Content [6] – for Variable Content [6], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the selected Scale Method should be retrieved. The following value must be present in the selected field for the Scale Method Fit from inside (Scale page edges proportionally) to be executed:
  • FitFromInside

  • Fit from inside (Add white space) – with this Scale Method, values for the width and height can be entered independently, which means that the page content may no longer remain proportional to the original size. The TrimBox image area is adjusted to the specified width or height and filled with white space as needed.
  • Variable Content [6] – for Variable Content [6] , select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the selected Scale Method should be retrieved. The following value must be present in the selected field in order for the Scale Method Fit from inside (Add white space) to be executed:
  • FitFromInsideProp

  • Fit from outside (Cut page) – with this scaling option, the Short Edge and the Long Edge can be entered independently, which may result in the page content no longer remaining proportional to the original size. The image area is adjusted to the specified Short Edge or Long Edge and any exceeding content is cropped accordingly.
  • Variable Content [6] – for Variable Content [6],  select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the selected Scale Method should be retrieved. The following value must be present in the selected field so that the Sale Method Fit from outside (Cut page) is executed:
  • FitFromOutside

  • Fit from outside (Scale page edges proportionally) – scales the image area to fit the specified size from the outside while remaining the original proportions. Only the image resolution is adjusted according to the applied enlargement or reduction. The Long Edge of the target file is used for the calculation.
  • Variable Content [6] – for Variable Content [6] , select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the selected Scale Method should be retrieved. The following value must be present in the selected field in order so that the Scale Method Fit from outside (Scale page edges proportionally) is executed:
  • FitFromOutsideProp

  • Stretch to fill – with this scaling option, the Short Edge and the Long Edge can be entered independently. The ImageBox is completely filled with the image, even if this causes the image to be distorted disproportionately.
  • Variable Content [6] – for Variable Content [6], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the selected Scale Method should be retrieved. The following value must be present in the selected field so that the Scale Method Stretch to fill is executed:
  • StretchToFit

  • Scale Options [3] – select whether the scaling should be applied in absolute terms or as a percentage.
    • Scaling by percentage – displays the current scaling of the width and height of the TrimBox. Entering a new value scales the content proportionally to the specified width or height as a percentage.
    • Scaling absolute – displays the current height or width of the TrimBox. Entering a new value scales the content to the specified height or width.
    • Width [4] – enter the target width here. For Variable Content [9], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the width should be retrieved.
    • Height [7] – enter the target height here. For Variable Content [8], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the height should be retrieved.
  • Pages [5] – for multipage files, scaling can be limited to a specific page range. Examples for page selection are provided in the info box [10]. Possible entries include:
    • All – All pages are scaled.
    • 8 – Page 8 is scaled.
    • 1-6 – Pages 1 to 6 are scaled.
    • -3-1 – the last 3 pages are scaled.
    • even – all even pages are scaled.
    • odd – all odd pages are formatted.
    • 1-5,8,13-16 – page 1 to 5, page 8 and page 13 to 16 are scaled.

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this function, refer to the sample file "Set_PageBox_Start". This source file contains a MediaBox measuring 450 x 300 mm and a TrimBox measuring 430 x 280 mm. The BleedBox is in exactly the same position as the MediaBox. The subject is to be produced in the size 330 x 250 mm (visible format).

After applying this Fixup, the corrected file "Set_PageBox_End" is created.
