1. Introduction
The step Create G7 Linearization Profile is the final substep within the G7 linearization process. The goal of this substep is to calculate a G7 linearization profile based on the calibrated measurement data. In this process, correction curves are generated for the individual color channels, which adjust the print system's tone value reproduction to meet the requirements of the G7 specification.
The calculated G7 correction curves take into account, in particular, the tone value increase (TVI) and the G7-based gray balance (Neutral Print Density Curve, or NPDC). The generated G7 linearization profile is then saved in the Profiling Project and used for the subsequent steps of the Color Setup process.
2. Setting Options
The Create G7 Linearization Profile dialog is divided into two sections:
- Curve Preview – displays the calculated G7 correction curves for the individual color channels in the left pane.
- Settings Area – displays the parameters for calculating the G7 linearization profile in the right pane, where they are configured.

2.1. Preview of Curves
The following options are available in the Curve Preview section of the dialog:
- Show or hide a color channel [1] – By checking or unchecking the checkbox for the respective color channel, the corresponding curve can be shown or hidden in the preview.
- Show or hide all color channels [2] – By checking or unchecking this checkbox, you can show or hide all color channels simultaneously in the curve preview.
- Curve Preview [3] – This graph displays the calculated G7 correction curves for each color channel. Changes to the settings are automatically recalculated, and the curves are updated in the graph.
2.2. Settings Area – Available Parameters
To calculate the G7 linearization profile, the following settings are available in the Settings area of the dialog:
- G7 Calculation Method for Neutral Gray [4] – This parameter determines the method used to calculate the gray balance for G7 linearization. The following options are available:
- Neutral CMY – this method calculates the G7 linearization while taking into account the printing system's native CMY gray balance. The target values for the neutral axis are gradually adjusted in the darker range from an ideally neutral axis toward the actual a* and b* values of the printing system. This method is particularly suitable for printing systems that cannot produce a neutral CMY black or a neutral gray balance at maximum ink coverage. This applies, for example, to many inkjet systems, in which the ink channel limits are designed primarily to achieve the widest possible Color Space rather than optimal CMY neutrality. By adapting to the system's native characteristics, a more uniform linearization and a visually improved gray balance are achieved, particularly in the darker tonal ranges.
- Grayscale – This method calculates G7 linearization based on an idealized neutral gray balance. It uses a theoretical neutral axis with constant target values for a* and b*, which runs between paper white and the black point of the printing system. This method is recommended for printing systems capable of achieving the most neutral CMY gray balance possible. It is also a prerequisite for G7-compliant evaluation in the G7 Grayscale, G7 Targeted, and G7 Colorspace modes.
- Correct Outliers [5] – Enable this option to automatically detect statistical outliers in the measurement data and take them into account when calculating the G7 correction curves. This option is enabled by default.
- Measurement Data Smoothing [6] – This parameter determines the extent to which the measurement data is smoothed before the G7 correction curves are calculated. The following options are available:
- None – The measurement data is used without additional smoothing.
- Low – A low level of smoothing is applied. This is the default setting and represents a good compromise between measurement data stability and the preservation of details.
- Medium – moderate smoothing is applied. This setting may be useful for slightly fluctuating measurement data.
- Strong – strong smoothing is applied. This setting should only be used when there are significant fluctuations in measurement values or unstable measurement conditions.

3. Additional Information
This step is required when wanting to achieve G7-compliant tonal reproduction (Idealliance) with a balanced gray axis in G7 Grayscale mode. To do this, the tonal curves of the individual color channels are adjusted so that the resulting gray axis matches the G7 target values.
3.1. Use without G7 Linearization
When intending to create a characterization exclusively in G7 Colorspace mode, you can omit the preliminary G7 linearization. In this case, when creating a characterization profile in the Separation Parameter [7] tab, set the Paper White Compensation parameter [8] to 100%. This ensures that the paper white point of the print medium is fully taken into account during profile calculation.
Please note that compliance with the G7 Colorspace requirements must subsequently be verified using the generated characterization.
