Check Bleed

Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • what this check validates, and
  • how and where this check can be applied.

1. Introduction

The check Check Bleed verifies whether the required Bleed is present in the print file. It ensures that the BleedBox is correctly defined and that printable content is present throughout the entire Bleed area. In addition, it checks whether Bleed is required, even if no printable content is located at the page edges.

2. General

The check is available within Automation when creating a Production Configuration. It is offered in the following Operations:

  • Check Print Item and Apply Fixups – this Operation checks the Print Item and defines which Fixup or Action is applied in case of success, as well as which Fixup or Action is applied in case of failure.
  • Check Print Item and Apply Fixup Chain – this Operation checks the Print Item and defines which Fixup Chain or Action is applied in case of success, as well as which Fixup Chain or Action is applied in case of failure.
  • Check Print Item and forward to – this Operation checks the Print Item and defines which Production Configuration or Action is applied in case of success, as well as which Production Configuration or Action is applied in case of failure.

Production Configurations in the application $PRODUCT_NAME_WORKFLOW are used in the following areas:

  • Create Automation Jobs – applying Production Configurations to selected Articles or Print Items.
  • Batch Processing – applying the selected Production Configuration to the print data to be processed.
  • Hotfolder – applying the selected Production Configuration to print data processed via a hotfolder.

How to create a Production Configuration is described in the chapter Create Production Configuration.

Detailed Description of individual Operations

A detailed description of all Operations available within a Production Configuration, as well as their correct application, can be found in the chapter Operations – Technical Description.

3. Description

With the check Check Bleed, it is possible to verify within the print file whether the defined Bleed is present at the respective edges or whether Bleed needs to be generated at all. The Bleed to be checked can be defined by the user.

Figure 1: The dialog Check Bleed

With this check, the presence of the required Bleed can be verified. The following options are available:

  • Templates [1] – settings defined in the dialog can be saved as a Template and used in the following Operations: Check Print Item and Apply Fixups, Check Print Item and Apply Fixup Chain, and Check Print Item and forward to. They can be applied to other Articles or Print Items.
  • Bleed [2] – enter the required Bleed values for Top, Bottom, Left and Right. For Variable Content [3], select the desired placeholder – Database Field or User-defined Field – from which the value for the Bleed Width should be retrieved.

Does Bleed need to be created?

Before the check verifies whether Bleed is fully present along the defined page edges, it first determines whether Bleed is required at all. A safety margin of 1 mm is predefined in the check. For page edges where no visible (printing) object extends into this 1 mm safety margin, no Bleed needs to be generated.
